When will I have the most success with potty training?

What's the best age to potty-train?

You want your little one to have basic communication and gross motor skills mastered, and for most children, this is between 22 and 28 months.

Did you know that babies can begin to recognize routines as early as 6-weeks old?!

Routines are a magical tool to help your baby feel safe and secure, simply because over time, they begin to associate with what happens next. There's nothing to worry about!

I recommend that families begin to incorporate the Eat-Play-Sleep routine with their newborns as soon as they arrive home from the hospital.

This routine isn't the be-all-end-all, obviously, because babies aren't robots. But the more you can do it, the more you are setting your baby up for success.

When your baby wakes for the day or from a nap, you change their diaper and offer a feeding. Burp them, and then have some "playtime" - the first few months this is simply staring in your baby's eyes or doing a few minutes of tummy time. Then, it's time to do a quick nap routine, because before you know it, they'll be ready to sleep again!

When they wake, repeat this cycle!

until it's bedtime.

This routine also allows for your baby to fall asleep in other ways than feeding-to-sleep and gives them more tools in their sleep toolkit.

🤷🏻‍♀️ Honestly, I don't remember much more than that when it comes to my babies' newborn days - they were a blur!

With my first son things were hard. Breastfeeding was hard. Sleep was hard.

With my second, things were slightly easier simply because I'd had the experience of going through it once already, but it was still a blur.

This is probably - okay, it IS a big reason - why I became a sleep consultant!

I could have used a little more help. A little more support. Especially in the sleep department.
